I-Techq's Charity Run with the Orphanage

Finally, I have been waiting for this day (19/1/13) for more than 2 weeks now. Our campus Statistic Society, I-Techqs held a charity run with a bunch of kids from the orphanage today. One of the reasons why I decided to join the event was mainly for charity. I mean, its not everyday an event like this just pops up out of nowhere right ? But still, it took me 2 or 3 days to decided whether I should join the run. In the end, I made a good choice.

Woke up super early today around 6 o'clock in the morning. The view from my window was pitch black. Even though I still had a few hours to spare in bed, I decided to wake up early so that I can see how my friends handle the pre-event work. I arrived at the event grounds around 7.30 in the morning. I was the first participant to arrive. Everybody else is practically sleeping in their comfy beds while I just stood there at a corner trying really hard not to die due to hypothermia.

Everyone from the society wore red, coincidentally I wore red for the event. Well more of a magenta kind of red. It wasn't long ( an hour after I arrived ) until other participants arrived. I was surprised that early of guys arrived first before the girls did. I literally lost hope of getting first place for the event since most of the guys that arrived later after me were all those typical athlete, sports kind of guy. A friend of mine asked me whether I could get top 3 or 5. I was standing at that time so I started pointing at the rest of the guys that were sitting behind my friend. I told him how I have not a slight chance of making it in the top 30 with all the guys sitting there being more energised and fit than I am. Guess what? Most of them heard what I said and they laughed. Really loud. I didn't see it as something to be embarrassed about so I laughed with them. One guy in particular even went up to me and said to run for fun....the same guy ended up first place.

But yeah in the end I run merely for fun. There was no way I could catch up to Pali or the guys from my floor. So I just enjoyed the moment. Most of the moments consisted of me yelling loudly at people saying to watch out for in coming cars and jokes about how the next check point is far away from where other people are. Even though I did not know what I got for the race, I am just proud that I was able to finish the race without puking or shouting vulgarity words out in the open due to exhaustion.

After the race there was booths set up by 'ProStar' where we can do health check ups. Height, weight, BMIs, Nicotine count, Blood Sugar level etc. I decided to do all of them instead of going back to my room early. Basically I weighed ** kilos ! and my height was 1**. My body mass index was okay though, a 26.2. I had 0% Nicotine in my body which surprised my lecturers a lot. I cannot believe that they thought I smoke cigarettes ! DId 33 sit ups and was able to stretch as far as 43 cm for the health screening. At the end of doing all sorts of ridiculous health related stuff, I thought to myself I just wasted my time and all I got was this  paper indicating my results. I got an 'excellent' for the health screening test by the way.

At the end of the day, prizes were given out to the top 3 runners. There was a bunch of categories, each divided into boys and girls.University students, kids and also University staff. To be honest, it was kind off funny how my first semester statistic lecturer won first prize for the staff category. I didn't bother paying much attention for the closing event until the mc announced my name all. My friends were yelling at me in a mean way to go to the front. I was busy texting my friend and did not know what was happening, so I got infront of everyone not knowing why I was called when all of a sudden a girl came up and gave me a hamper full of junk food which I have consumed 45% of it. Apparently I have an ideal body mass index so they decided to give me something.

The kids were not alone though. There was also a foreign exchange student from Germany, Stefen. Most of us thought he was a foreign English teacher at first. All of the participants minus the kids were surprised when Stefen started speaking in Malay. He literally spoke in Bahasa Melayu through out the whole event ! The only word he didn't know or forgot was 'Selesa' so I translated it to him as 'Comfortable'. The kids, boys and girls are really fond of him. After everything was over, everyone gathered around him and asked him how the race was and stuff.

The event was full of laughter mostly done by the kids as they do have lots of energy compare to us grown ups. Through out the fun filled event, full of joyous laughter and smiles, I almost forgot that these kids have no parents. They look just like any other normal kids but somehow they look happier than others. Even though some were a bit rough around the edges, I can see the strong bonds between the kids. I think my eyes went all watery for a bit. I mean, I seriously cannot imagine myself in their position and seriously have no idea how they feel. Some people are just blessed by God differently than others. Some you can see it now while others Insyaallah it will happen in the future.

Overall the event was great. The committee from both I-Techqs and ProStar did an awesome job in conducting the event. Hoping to see more events like this in the future.

Closing event. You can see which part of the crowd are the University students and which are our special guests for the day. (Hint:University Students=Texting 24/7)

Food was great. Stefen in the left side of the picture sitting next to Danny. The kids in the middle talked non-stop. It was hilarious.

Some more pics of them during lunch.
